"It's probably a good thing that you are," Topher said. "I'm sure she'll appreciate it once you guys are older, and she realizes what you've been doing for her." It was sort of like how Topher's dad tried to shield him from as much negativity as he possibly could. That's what family did. They watched over you, protected you.
